There are moments when the world feels as though it’s holding its breath—when a quiet truth rises from the edges of things, asking to be seen. In the hours after arrival, as warmth and safety begin to settle into Rose’s bones, something hidden stirs back to the surface. A discovery meant for another time, another person, now demands to be understood. And in the shifting afternoon light of the earthship, as old ink meets new eyes, Rose and Ela come to realize that some warnings don’t fade with the years—they only wait for the right hands to open them.

Rose didn’t speak as she led Ela back across the threshold of the earthship. The air was cool inside, still holding the faint herbal scent of the morning’s tea, and the soft creak of the door behind them sounded too loud for what she was about to do. Her pulse felt like it lived in her fingertips.

She set her pack on the table and unfastened the worn top flap. The journal slid out as though it had been waiting for this exact moment, the cracked spine bending gently in her hands. Ela watched, brows knit in quiet curiosity—until Rose opened the first few pages and turned the book toward her.

The charts, diagrams, and notes sat stark on the page, the ink faded but still steady. Ela’s breath caught.

“What… is this?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Rose pushed the journal a little closer. “Read the beginning.”

Ela did. Her eyes flicked left to right, faster and faster. She turned a page. And another. Her free hand rose to her mouth, fingers trembling as she read the sentence Rose had read half a dozen times that morning:

The Electromagnetic Luminal Alignment is predictable—every fifty, one-hundred, or three-hundred years, it’s cyclical, the pattern repeats. The next occurrence is projected for the year 2100, near the winter solstice. Whoever finds this must prepare, must warn, must understand that the world resets itself according to rules older than our science.

Ela exhaled, long and shaky. She looked up, searching Rose’s face. “Where did you get this?”
